Elizabeth Whissel

In an effort to control the new life stresses of being a university student, Elizabeth sought out her first yoga class in 2004. By summer of 2006, she had become a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) with Yoga Alliance and a Registered Holistic Nutritionist (RHN) with Canadian School of Natural Nutrition.

Elizabeth’s yogic education began with the 200-hour yoga teacher training by Yogi Vishvketu at Upward Dog Yoga Centre in 2005. She furthered her studies with Yogi Vishvketu in 2014 by completing the 300-hour yoga teacher training at the Anand Prakash Ashram in India. To deepen her practice and refine her teaching she regularly attends Akhanda Yoga® workshops and trainings with her teacher, Yogi Vishvketu and various renowned teachers such as: Seane Corn, Jill Miller, Natasha Rizopoulos and Ray Long.

Elizabeth recently completed her Master’s dissertation at the University of Ottawa researching the biomechanics of yoga as well as presenting this work at the Symposium on Yoga Research (SYR) hosted by the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT). Elizabeth firmly believes in evidence based yoga therapy and is actively engaged in research, as exemplified by her graduate research exploring the biomechanics of yoga. She is an active member of IAYT and remains current on novel academic research in the physical therapy and yoga field. Elizabeth’s public classes offer a strong emphasis on alignment and safety, using the practice of yoga as therapy. Elizabeth welcomes the opportunity to speak at your next wellness seminar or lecture at your yoga teacher training. 

IAYT-Seminar

As a way to merge the theory of academic research and practice of yoga, Elizabeth completed the Yoga Tune Up® – Level 1 certification (created by Jill Miller). She uses the Yoga Tune Up® Therapy Balls as well as the less than traditional Yoga Tune Up® postures to help students find body blind spots to better move on and off their mat.

You can attend Elizabeth’s scheduled classes or schedule a private lesson. Private classes with Elizabeth are a great way to address specific injuries or concerns in a safe, friendly and intimate environment.
